searching

Thus far, most of what we have covered in the readings, homework, and class room conversation has been about searching for ideas, books, articles, etc. . I learned a lot about how to get the most out of my search.  I never really knew how to use the Boolean operators, which probably has a lot to do with my fear of trying to search the internet for articles, and of the internet in general.  Yes, I’m one of those.  While taking this class I have become much more comfortable with the internet, a huge step for me.  I still get a little frusterated with how picky the library catalog and database searches can be.  It seems like the only way you can be safe with your search is to use the key word search or have part or all of the citation.  I still am a little bit confused about the Library of Congress and the Dewey Decimal system and any connection that they might have to each other.  It looks to me like the Dewey Decimal system is outdated and unused.  I would love it if someone would fill me in on whether or not it is still used in elementary school libraries.  I have fond memories of shuffeling through the card catalog to find “Where the Wild Things Are”.

cmc

I never knew the cmc room was even in the education building, or that it even existed.  Its pretty cool that they have the letter cutter that anyone can use.  It would have made my life so much easier on past projects I had for school.  I really enjoyed seeing the different kits they use in the elementary and middle school classes. I think I enjoyed playing with the blocks a little too much.  The fact that they have to be cautious of parents who try to use the teacher’s editions of the text books to help their children in school is just sad.  When did the work day become too long and grueling for a parent to take five minutes out of their day to explain to little suzie or johnny how to do long division?  I really don’t see myself needing or using much of wht is in the cmc room, but I do think it’s great that all those resources are there for the whole community to use.  Im not sure how the tutoring program works, outside of what the lady told us today, but I would like to learn more about it, and it seems like an idea that could both aid the community and give education students some valuble experience.

Crazy People

I just read a news report about a guy in Austin,TX who burned a radio station down because he did not like the palylist.  He was a volunteer there and he had a dispute with another volunteer over what was to be played on the internet broadcast.  His program was “Mellow Down Easy”, a jazz program.  That seems like a touch of irony to me.  This is just one more example of people being entirely to high strung these days.

Library Archives

I thought that the special collections archive was pretty cool.  The man that ran it was also the most clear about what was there and how they worked.  I still don’t understand the purpouse of the first set of archives we went to. If anyone has the answer  I would really appreciate some help.

Blogs

I don’t know why anyone would care what I have to say on this online journal, but hey people.
