So, today is Earth Day, one of my favorite holidays, which happens to fall right after one of my other favorite holidays. If you do not know what I’m talking about, then do not worry about it. As I was trying to think of what to write about for this blog, it struck me that I could address some environmental issues that are faced by libraries. Call me a tree hugger if you like, but I kind of like having them around. Going digital not only made things a little easier for both librarians and patrons, but also cut down on the use of paper products used by the libraries. Cards for card catalogues were eliminated and many of the articles can be viewed on a computer screen with the click of a button. A lot of extra waste is created by vending machines and coffee shops which use disposable cups, but a lot of that is up to the people who purchase these items instead of buying reusable cups and nalagines. I would, however, like to see more recycling receptacles in the library. This would encourage students to throw their recyclables in them while walking by as opposed to a garbage can. These are just a few things that crossed my mind. Happy Earth Day!
